Before coming to live in New York City, Rafael del la Uz began his career in film and television in Havana, Cuba where he worked as a Director of Photography and cameraman on numerous award winning films including the feature film It Happened in Havana (Hacerse el Sueco) which was awarded at the Havana International Film festival in 2001. He was Director of Photography for the documentary The Cuban Game (El Juego de Cuba) which won Best Documentary at the La CinemaFe Film Festival in New York City, 2003 and in the Malaga Film Festival in Spain and was also selected for the Joris Ivens Award. He was DP for Who Are You a short film selected for the Venice Film festival. Since coming to New York, Rafael has worked for HBO, PBS, Discovery Channel, TLC, BBC, MTV, VH1, NHK as well as various independent films. Ariana, the critically acclaimed short film for which he was Director of Photography was selected for the Cannes Film festival in 2004, awarded at the Italian Film Festival ‘Arrivano I Corti” and was an official selection at the Palm Springs International Film festival in 2005. In 2004 Rafael worked as camera operator for Tim Robbin’s production Embedded, awarded at the Venice Film Festival. He is currently Director of Photography for MTV’s documentary series True Life and is also Co-Director/Producer and Director of Photography for the feature length documentary The Color of Land (awarded a 2004 NYSCA grant) and Co-director/Producer and cameraman for Hunger Can’t Wait a documentary about the controversial Bolivian indigenous Indian leader Evo Morales. He recently collaborated as a producer, cameraman and editor with Emmy award winning director John Alpert for the Discovery/Times documentary Venezuela: A Revolution in Progress which will air in April 2005. Rafael begins work as DP on his next HD feature length this summer. |
